Code Of Behaviour

We are committed to the creation of an inclusive and respectful environment in which all members of the school community are aware of and live up to high expectations for their conduct. We have a detailed Code of Behaviour and Discipline in place. Our School Code details our expectations:

Teachers will:

  • Be qualified to teach.
  • Be committed to high standards in their teaching – be prepared in their classroom planning.
  • Have the best interests of each child at heart.
  • Help and encourage each child to learn to the best of their ability.
  • Create a pleasant classroom learning environment.
  • Work with parents to provide the best education for their children – keep in contact through parent-teacher meetings, reports and homework journal.
  • Use respectful language when interacting with others in the school community.
  • Work with other teachers and professionals as a team, sharing ideas and workload.
  • Continue to improve their teaching ability by taking courses and further training.
  • Respect confidential information relating to colleagues, students and families.

Children will:

  • Work to the best of their ability with neat, careful work.
  • Be respectful in language and attitude towards others.
  • Be kind, thoughtful, helpful and truthful.
  • Obey the rules of the classroom – putting up a hand to speak, asking permission to leave the desk, not chatting during the lesson.
  • Keep own belongings neat and clean – schoolbag, desk, copies and books – don’t write on covers or tear pages.

Parents will:

  • Send their child to school every day, not arranging holidays during term-time.
  • Ensure their child is wearing the correct clothes – uniform or tracksuit, correct shoes, coat etc in wintertime.
  • Arrange for their child to be brought to and collected from school at the right times (9.10 am and 2.50pm/1.50 Infants).
  • Provide a healthy lunch for their child each day – ensure that their child does not bring sweets, chocolate, crisps or fizzy drinks.
  • Regularly check their child’s schoolbag is clean and that the correct items are in their schoolbag – all books, pens, pencils, rubber, ruler needed, no toys or inappropriate items.
  • Write a note in the journal explaining any absence.
  • Encourage and help their child to make a good effort at homework each day. Sign the homework journal.
  • Join in with school activities as available – Parents’ Association, Sports days and outings, concerts, shared reading/maths, Communion/Confirmation preparation.
  • Use respectful language when interacting with others in the school community.

The School Principal will:

  • Work with teachers to ensure an appropriate education for each child enrolled – guide and direct teachers in the performance of their duties.
  • Be responsible for the day-to-day management of the school – work with other staff to ensure the school is a safe and effective place to work and learn.
  • In consultation with school community, plan for improvements to the school and monitor progress.
  • Encourage the involvement of parents in the education of their children and in the improvement of the school.
  • Be responsible for the creation of a school environment which is supportive of learning among students and which supports the professional development of teachers.
  • Use respectful language when interacting with others in the school community.
  • Be available and willing to meet with parents and staff by appointment to discuss any concerns or ideas they may have.
  • Arrange for appropriate assessment, recording and reporting of each child’s progress in the school.

Rewards & Sanctions:

We encourage positive behaviour at Glenasmole National School. A balance is maintained between rewards and sanctions in such a way that students learn that the choices they make will have consequences. A whole-school approach is used in the administration of rewards and sanctions. Examples of rewards are – verbal praise, Class Dojo points, homework passes, class treats, golden time, pupil and table of the week. Examples of sanctions are – verbal warning, written warning, removal from group, note in journal, school rules to be written out, Principal and parents notified. The school Code of Behaviour and Discipline details the process for dealing with unacceptable behaviour.
