Green Schools Initiative

Green-Schools is an international environmental education programme, offering a well-defined, controllable way for schools to take environmental issues from the curriculum and apply them to the day-to-day running of their school.

Glenasmole has been proudly participating in the Green Schools initiative since 2005. Over the years, we have demonstrated our dedication to creating a sustainable environment within our school and community.

Through the collective efforts of our Green Schools Committee, comprised of students from Junior Infants to 6th Class and and staff, we have successfully achieved nine flags. These milestones signify our commitment to various environmental themes and showcase our ongoing dedication to sustainability.

Global Citizenship- Food and Biodiversity

Here at Glenasmole National School, we are extremely dedicated to our Green Schools journey. Last year, we achieved our 10th Green School flag: Global Citizenship: Food and Biodiversity. To celebrate, we even welcomed a wormery to our school to help us explore composting and sustainable practices!

This year, we are continuing to focus on utilising our school grounds to grow and harvest our own crops, while also exploring biodiversity on both a local and global scale.

Our Green Schools Committee is leading the way with this project and have done a fantastic job so far. This year, we are excited to be developing our outdoor spaces even further to support our growing gardens and biodiversity initiatives.

What’s next in our Green Schools journey?
We are looking ahead to continuing our focus on sustainability, reducing waste, and exploring new ways to care for our environment. With each flag, we aim to build on the progress we’ve made and inspire our students to become active global citizens who care for the planet.

We can’t wait to see how our gardens flourish this year!
