In Junior Infants the children learn sounds from the Jollyphonics programme, they learn how to blend short words and begin to read. They also learn sight words that cannot be sounded out phonetically. The children work on their pencil grip and begin letter formation. They learn all about numbers 0-5, 2d shapes, patterns, months, days of the week, seasons of the year. In Gaeilge the children learn new words and short phrases. Their general development is enhanced through Aistear, Art, P.E., Music, Drama, S.P.H.E., Science, History, Geography, Religious Education. Much of this learning is done through play, songs and games. A big part of junior infants is learning some independence, being able to express themselves through oral language and co-operating with the teacher and their peers. Social skills and friendships are important, we encourage the use of please/thank you throughout the school day and inclusion/playing nicely together.
